Concern About the High Number of Motorcycle Crashes
Lakeside‚ California is an unincorporated community located in East San Diego County and is famous for its’ country setting with a high number of ranches and horses in the area. In fact‚ the city houses an 8-acre rodeo facility known as the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds. According to the 2000 census conducted by the CDP‚ Lakeside’s population has reached up to 40‚000 people and has a total area of 6.1 square miles.
There are several main roads‚ streets‚ and freeways that can take you to Lakeside. You have Interstate 8 (I-8) that leads to an intersection at Mapleview Street. Turn right and you will enter Maine Avenue from the city’s right. Julian Avenue and Woodside Avenue are also main streets located around Lakeside. Cars and motorcycles can also come from the south through Los Coches Road.
Like other rural and unincorporated areas of San Diego County‚ Lakeside is not immune from its’ share of traffic collisions and motor vehicle accidents. According to the 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS)‚ the unincorporated parts of San Diego County experienced 2‚252 injury auto accidents and 90 fatal car wrecks in 2008. In addition‚ these areas also saw 80 pedestrian accidents and 75 bicycle crashes. But the most alarming statistic is the number of motorcycle injury accidents that occur in these rural areas. In 2008‚ unincorporated areas of San Diego County witnessed 324 motorcycle wrecks involving injury. That is nearly as many as in the City of San Diego (355) despite the significant population difference. Even more alarming is the fact that‚ of those motorcycle accidents‚ 27 were fatal. That is far more than any other area in San Diego County (the city of San Diego only saw 16 deadly motorcycle crashes) and is more than half (54%) of the total number of fatal motorcycle crashes.
“What is the reason for the disproportionate amount of motorcycle accidents‚ particularly those that lead to loss of life?” asks San Diego motorcycle accident attorney Ross Jurewitz. “It seems that motorcyclists are attracted to the freedom that winding country roads bring‚ but they also appear to be the victim of these dangerous roads and other drivers who may not have the reaction time or vision to look out for motorcyclists.”
