Generally speaking, the human body is pretty tough. It has its limitations, of course, but when push comes to literal shove, the human body can take a lot of punishment. Even in the most severe scenarios, our bodies do a tremendous job in attempting to protect us. Unfortunately, our body’s ability to endure can be a mixed blessing. Especially if there are unseen internal injuries. An injury like a ruptured spleen or a torn blood vessel can slowly, but surely, cause an individual to bleed to death.
In most instances of internal injury, the person is well aware of the problem. If they have been involved in an accident – perhaps in a motor vehicle – and suffered a penetrating or a blunt force trauma, the signs will be glaring. Symptoms like excessive bleeding or loss of consciousness are normal in these situations. But, in some instances, the damage may not be so apparent. Symptoms can start off subtle, and then slowly build with intensity. Some of the more common signs of internal trouble can include:
- Purple pools of blood just under the skin known as ecchymosis
- Severe abdominal swelling or tenderness
- Dizziness or light headedness
- Painful headaches
This means no matter how healthy or seemingly “ok” an individual may feel following an accident, a thorough medical review is always necessary. The body is quite good at masking the pain, so it takes a professional to notice any serious trauma. If you or a loved one have been involved in an accident recently, but have not sought medical attention, we recommend doing so as soon as possible.
